Before I leave you with all the utmost ridiculously delicious-looking pictures of dim-sum, I would like to know what crossed your mind when you heard of the term "Yum Cha"?
What crossed my mind was this commercial on television years ago. If you are near my age, you would probably be able to relate to that. Sometimes, tv commercials are strangely part of a good childhood too, aren't they?
I had my sister watch this with me after all these years to reminisce the old times. Haha.
I still remember I was quite young when this commercial appeared and it left quite an impact on me that time and really made me want to try Yum Cha someday. But of course, I was too young to remember that.
Until just a few days ago, I got to indulge in the all the delicious dim sum they offered there through a food-tasting event for my very first time. I am honestly amazed and surprised at how they make each dim sum so tasty and different from the ones I have tasted.
A short introduction about them...
Also popularly known as chee cheong fun! I didn't manage to try the ones with prawns but only the following one. But I am sure it tasted good because their prawns never fail to satisfy stomachs(as proved from previous dim sums mentioned)
Mmm it tasted alright to me. Just like how it would taste like when you buy it from dessert stores outside. But I think it's a great choice of dessert after dimsum because it is kind of refreshing.
I was hoping for a more jelly-like texture but this may be a little sticky in my opinion. The taste of it was fine though.
For those of you who are not into cold desserts, they do offer hot ones too. The very common dessert which I think all of you know. This one was in black sesame. I enjoy the sweetness in black sesame glutinous rice balls anytime.

1) Fish Roe Siew Mai
I have tried Siew Mai probably a thousand times in my life. *didn't really count-of course you know that But this one at Yum Cha really surprised my taste buds. I have never had a siew mai with the "bouncy" texture! It tasted reallyyy good I couldn't help but have more.
I usually cannot have too many siew mai because of how it is filled with meat and too much can be an overkill. But I was taken aback by these ones I could probably have many and not feel sick.
I learnt that they have more prawns than meat in the siew mai and that might be the reason why! This is a must-try!
2) BBQ Pork Buns
One of the most common dim sum you cannot tell me you don't know. It's basically Char Siew buns. It tasted average to me.
The taste of pork was just like a normal char siew bun; sweet but not too sweet. (:
3) Yum Cha Prawn Dumpling
My absolute favourite to-order dish whenever I have dim sum! I was so eager to order this. I must say, I am not amaze at all that it didn't disappoint after having tried their siew mai.
Their prawns are really heaven-made. From the prawn dumplings I've tried before, it is hard to find one that knows how to make the outer layer right. Most of the ones I had either had them too hard, too thick or too dry.
Yum Cha really lived up to my expectations. The outer layer was just right! It was soft and combined with their heavenly prawns, I had a foodgasm. I mean, just look at how I smile with that dumpling. We're basically best friends!
Here's a brief sample of how their prawns look like -
4) Squid Ink Dumpling
This dish attracted my attention. I was pretty curious to try this as I have never ever heard or seen it before. Have you?
My initial thought was "maybe it tastes weird" But yet again, I was wrong. It actually tasted good!
It had that that same mouthwatering texture as siew mai but except it had a more unique taste to it. It was something different which is a new experience for my taste buds. Haha. If you're interested in trying something new, pick this!
5) Custard Buns
This was a heat and very popular among people just a few months ago but it died down a little, I noticed. Haha. Sometimes food have trends too.
Personally, I haven't tried much of custard buns. The one at Yum Cha was only my second time. I find it a tad bit too sweet for me. And the bun might be too thick as well.
To sidetrack a little, I always have trouble eating custard buns right..
LOL. They always end up flowing out by the sides of my mouth.
6) Xiao Long Bao
Another one of those popular dishes ordered when it comes to dim sum. This was quite the heat among the bloggers who were there. I remember they ordered a lot of this.
Just something to add, I have seen a number of Xiao Long Bao not being able to grasp the skill of making the perfect outer layer of it. It has to be soft and not too thick. The concept is just like the outer layer of prawn dumplings.
I thought Yum Cha grasped it really well though. As you can probably tell from the picture, the outer layer is thin and soft enough. Of course, the bits of soup inside were great as well.
7) Scallop Pea-Shoot Dumpling
Another new dim sum I tried! It looks rather interesting, don't you think? I loved it. I think their dumplings are simply amazing.
This is the third time I am mentioning about the texture of it. If you don't know what texture I am talking about, you have to try it!
I always look out for the natural sweetness when it comes to scallops. Some places just lack in those, you might be surprised. I was glad it left me with satisfaction (:
8) Beancurd Roll with Superior Sauce
This was a special one. This one is with sauce; pretty different if you compare to all of those above. It tasted a little like fish cake to me but with a little twist of flavours. Probably a result of the superior sauce and beancurd. All of those made it into quite the scrumptious dish.
Valerie thought it tasted like ngoh hiang which I don't think so HAHA
9) Lotus Leaf Glutinous Rice
Meh not that impressive...
Until you saw this!
And this!
My first look at it and I thought, "this must taste pretty bland". Because it looked bland! I love how food never ceases to amaze me by proving i'm wrong.
I had just a tiny bit of it and I am convinced this glutinous rice is fragrant and worth trying. Surprise, surprise. I wonder how many surprises have I got from food already. I don't mind more.
10) Paper Chicken Wings
I think this screams "TRY ME" just by looking at the name and the picture, doesn't it? A lot of bloggers gave really positive feedback about these chicken wings when they tried it.
I personally feel that they probably put hours and hours of hard work into it to come up with chicken wings this flavourful. It was a pleasant taste to savour.
11) Century Egg Lean Meat Congee
Ordered something extra to try so that I'd be able to provide more feedbacks! I thought their congee was filled with that aromatic flavour that all congees should have. The saltiness was just right.
12) Fresh Prawn Rice Flour Roll
Also popularly known as chee cheong fun! I didn't manage to try the ones with prawns but only the following one. But I am sure it tasted good because their prawns never fail to satisfy stomachs(as proved from previous dim sums mentioned)
13) BBQ Pork Rice Flour Roll
I was even more convinced that the the one with prawns will taste good after I had my chance in tasting the one in BBQ Pork. Again, major point of making a rice flour roll taste good is its outer layer!
This one was smooth and thin. Really enjoyable to have it in your mouth. Yum!
14) Crispy Red Bean with Banana
To be honest, I am not a big fan of goreng pisang so you could probably imagine why this was not to my liking.. However, some bloggers commented saying this was good. So if you enjoy eating goreng pisang and want to try something different, you should give this one a go ;)
15) Prawn Mango Sesame Fritters
Oh I know! I'm sorry I didn't get to take a picture of it! But I did get to try it. Valerie loved it because she pretty much love everything with mango. Haha
But I believe you would love this too!
The inside comes with mango and prawns, to state the obvious. The taste is just filled with rich fragrance.
You can probably imagine why with the combination of the texture of their amazing prawns, sweetness of mango and that outer layer of crisp.
16) Crispy Silver Fish
which is the one at the top. I did not get to try the one at the bottom but it's called 17) Crispy Vegetarian Spring Roll.
Anyway, I didn't taste much of silver fish on that plate. It is crispy though, just like how the name of the dish calls it.

I am slightly guilty about not being able to review every one of the food that was brought to the table that day because I did not manage to try all of them.
18) Shark's Fin with Meat Dumpling
Definitely going back to try this. Simply because it looks too good to resist. (I think I may be influenced by how good their dumplings are)

DESSERT TIMEEEEEE
19) Baked Mini Egg Tarts
I think the picture speaks for itself. That shiny yellow centre that makes you want to salivate or gomble it down whole. The crust is not of those like the pineapple tarts but more like the portuguese egg tarts you know.
I think it's extremely important for pastries to not be overly sweet. This one definitely got it right!
20) Chilled Mango Pudding
21) Pomelo Sago in Mango Juice
Mmm it tasted alright to me. Just like how it would taste like when you buy it from dessert stores outside. But I think it's a great choice of dessert after dimsum because it is kind of refreshing.
22) Osmanthus Cake
I was hoping for a more jelly-like texture but this may be a little sticky in my opinion. The taste of it was fine though.
23) Glutinous Rice Ball in Ginger Tea
For those of you who are not into cold desserts, they do offer hot ones too. The very common dessert which I think all of you know. This one was in black sesame. I enjoy the sweetness in black sesame glutinous rice balls anytime.

My stomach was SO bloated after all the food. So was Valerie! We have been well-fed! Thank you Yum Cha @ ChinaTown for the generous amount of food. I really enjoyed myself and will definitely go back again for more!
I think it's safe to say all bloggers did (:
